Four Things the Sky Does on One DayAnd the fifth, which is ours
A six-planet alignment before dawn, a total solar eclipse, a new moon, and the Perseids at their peak — all inside twenty-four hours. Here is what is actually visible, from where, and the one event nobody is listing that matters most to a house named after an Egyptian god.
The short answer. On August 12, 2026, four notable sky events fall on a single date: a six-planet alignment before sunrise, the year's only total solar eclipse crossing northern Russia, Greenland, Iceland, northern Spain and a corner of Portugal, a new moon, and the peak of the Perseid meteor shower. The eclipse is not visible from most of the United States. The Perseids are — and the new moon makes this the darkest Perseid peak in years.
01 — Before sunrise
Six planets in a line
Jupiter, Mercury, Mars, Uranus, Saturn and Neptune all sit on the same side of the sky before dawn. Mars and Saturn are the easy ones. Jupiter and Mercury hang low, so a genuinely clear eastern horizon matters more than a dark sky. Uranus needs binoculars. Neptune needs a telescope, and honestly, needs someone who already owns one.
Los Angeles window: roughly 5:28–5:46 AM.
New York: roughly 5:18–5:34 AM.
The phrase "planet parade" oversells it every time. What you will actually see is two bright points and, if the air is clean, two faint ones. It is still worth the alarm.
02 — Afternoon into evening
A total solar eclipse — somewhere else
The only total solar eclipse of 2026. The moon's shadow crosses the Arctic and northern Russia, then Greenland, then Iceland, then makes landfall in northwestern Spain and clips the northeastern tip of Portugal. In Spain it happens roughly an hour before sunset, with the sun low and the corona coming out over the Atlantic — which will make it one of the most photographed eclipses ever recorded.
Partial in the U.S.: Alaska and the Northeast only — Maine around 22%, New York 18–20%, down through the Mid-Atlantic and Upper Midwest.
Not visible at all: California, Texas, Florida, most of the South and Midwest. The sun is below the horizon or outside the shadow.
If you are in the visible zone, you need certified eclipse glasses. A partial eclipse is never safe to look at directly, at any percentage, for any length of time.
If you are in Los Angeles, as we are: nothing. The most dramatic thing happening that day happens to somebody else, which is a very Atum way for a day to go. He is the god of the sun going down. On August 12 it goes down over the Atlantic, on schedule, without us.
03 — All day
New moon
A solar eclipse is only possible at new moon — that is the mechanism, the moon passing between earth and sun. So the new moon is not a separate coincidence so much as the same event seen from the other side.
What it means practically: no moonlight after dark. Which sets up the fourth event perfectly.
04 — After dark, into the small hours
The Perseids, at their darkest peak in years
The Perseid meteor shower peaks on the night of August 12 into the morning of August 13. In most years the moon washes out the faint meteors and you see a fraction of what is falling. This year the moon is new and absent, so the sky is as dark as this shower ever gets.
When: late evening onward, improving steadily toward pre-dawn.
What you need: distance from city light, twenty minutes for your eyes to adjust, and no phone screen during those twenty minutes.
The debris comes from comet Swift-Tuttle. Grains of it, mostly sand-sized, hitting the atmosphere at enormous speed and burning up. Nothing about that description prepares you for what it looks like.
This is the one to plan around. It is the only one of the four that is genuinely, unarguably visible from Los Angeles.
The fifth event, which nobody is listing
Around this time of year, in the eastern sky just before dawn, Sirius reappears after roughly seventy days of invisibility behind the sun's glare. Astronomers call it a heliacal rising.
The Egyptians called it Sopdet, and they built a calendar on it.
Sopdet — Sothis to the Greeks — was the goddess of the star, and her reappearance announced the annual flooding of the Nile and the start of the Egyptian new year, Wepet Renpet, the Opening of the Year. She was associated with Isis, whose tears were said to raise the river. The temple of Isis at Philae is believed to have been oriented to her rising.
That temple is also one of the three places on earth where a recipe for kyphi — the great compound incense of the ancient world, and the origin of the word perfume — still survives on a wall.
One honest caveat, since the internet will tell you otherwise: the exact date of Sirius's heliacal rising depends entirely on your latitude, falling anywhere between late July and early September depending on where you stand. It is not a fixed calendar date, and because of the earth's precession it has drifted centuries away from where it sat in the Old Kingdom. Anyone telling you the Egyptian new year lands precisely on August 12 is selling something.
But the shape of it is real, and it is the reason this particular date lands strangely well for us. A day that begins with planets, ends with meteors, and turns on the sun going down — presided over, on the far side of the sky, by a star that told an entire civilisation when to begin again.
For the night of the twelfth. The Perseids reward patience and dark. Take something on your skin that behaves the same way — resinous, slow, better an hour in than at first spray.
